Small Head
1931 sovereigns have the new smaller head portrait of King George V, which was used from 1929 to 1932 inclusive, making these quite desirable from a type collectors point of view.

Mints
Only the Melbourne and Perth Mints in Australia and the Pretoria Mint in South Africa issued sovereigns in 1931, The mintmark is visible on the ground above the centre of the date. This was the last year of issue for both Perth and Melbourne Mints.

Different Portrait
All George V sovereigns from 1911 to 1928 use the same "first head" portrait, but those issued for the four years from 1929 to 1932 used a new smaller head portrait, making these quite desirable from a type collectors point of view.
