eBay Scams & Deception
A selected catalogue of scams, deception, dodgy descriptions, fakes, and other gold sovereign related bad stuff on eBay.

eBay Copyright Thieves & Crooks Named and Shamed
It's dishonest to copy photographs, and misleading to buyers.

noone.2008 Selling Non-Existent Sovereign on eBay
eBay seller noone.2008 of Bury, Lancashire, United Kingdom, offered a 1979 Proof Gold Sovereign for sale on eBay using our high quality copyright photos.
Copyright abuse is dishonest.
Wonder who he stole the coins from?

High eBay Feedback is No Guarantee of Integrity or Honesty
When we wrote this page, this eBay member's feedback was 7; with 100% positive according to eBay.
We think this clearly shows that high eBay feedback is not a reliable indication of honesty or intelligence.

Royal Mint 1979 Gold Proof Sovereign
1979 Gold Proof Sovereign
In original Royal Mint condition. Boxed in the original blue wallet case and the Royal Mint logo stamped in gold on the front See photo for detail).
Encapsulated to keep its lustre this is a Superb coin and a must have for any serious collector.
Proof
Proofs are specially struck coins, with a highly polished mirror finished background, and the raised design in contrasting matt finish. They are issued as limited editions, and are more expensive than the ordinary uncirculated version. 1979 proof sovereigns are contained in a plastic capsule within a Royal Mint leatherette wallet, but were not issued with a certificate in 1979, although those from 1980 onwards were issued with certificate.
They are unnecessarily good for use in jewellery, which would ruin their special finish in a very short space of time, but they are ideal for the person who would prefer to keep them as a memento or family heirloom.

What's Wrong?
Copyright theft is dishonest, and against eBay rules, although they do not police it unless pushed.
See next paragraph.

Price
The seller was originally asking a starting price of £300.
It is likely that he will fail to sell it at this price, especially as the greedy bastard is asking 55 more than we ask for our proofs.
The stupid crook has also used our photos of an ordinary uncirculated sovereign rather than a proof one (we do have both photos on our page). Our price on the Unc coins is only 220 each.
If he had placed a link to our webpage, potential buyers could have seen they could have bought their coins from an established reputable dealer rather than taking a gamble on some unknown eBay crook.
If he reduces his price to a sensbible one, it is likely that he would have got more by selling to us even especially when eBay's 10% selling fees are taken into account. PayPal fees cost extra.
The steaming idiot then goes on to copy our explanation of the difference between uncirculated and proof sovereigns. Duh!

eBay Guilty of Negligence or Complicity
We will report this example of copyright abuse using our standard Statutory Declaration via the eBay VeRO programme.
We look forward to taking legal action against eBay for their negligence and / or complicity if they fail to take down the offending material promptly.

Selling Gold Sovereigns & Other Coins on eBay
We point out that sellers may often get more money, for less effort, by selling to a specialised dealer, such as us, rather than via eBay.
