1830 British Gold Sovereigns For Sale - William IV
It is not well known that an 1830 dated gold sovereign exists for William IV, but a rare proof pattern example sold in May 2008, and another in late 2009.
Unlisted in Spink, Marsh, & Fearon
Quite why Michael Marsh failed to include this coin in his otherwise excellent book "The Gold Sovereign", we will never know.
We have waited 10 years for a photograph of one of the 1830 William IV specimens to help complete this page, and for over 40 years to own one.
In May 2008 one sold in the Ira & Larry Goldberg "Millenia Collection" auction in May 2008, and another in the 25th June 2009 Spink sale, which sold for £7,920 which was 70% above its estimate.
We have received permission from Goldberg to reproduce the photographs of the specimen from their sale, and we thank them for their kindness.
