1835 Gold Full Sovereign William IV Second Bust London

The 1835 gold full sovereign displays the second bust portrait of King William IV on the obverse, with the reverse showing the Willaim IV crowned shield.

The second bust of Willaim IV is distinguishable from the original as the top of the ear appears broader with a flatter edge, the the revere beading also being more course. The obverse design of the William IV shield was introduced to replace the St George and the Dragon engraving, designed by Benedetto Pistrucci.

Hammered gold coins called 'sovereigns' had been minted on and off between 1489-1604, whereupon James I (VI) changed the name of the 20/- gold piece to a 'Unite'. The reform coinage sovereign of 1817 onwards was issued as a normal circulation type coin, and also as a proof.

The 1835 gold sovereign was only the fourth sovereign to be issued during the reign of King William IV. This is because the sovereign wasn't issued in 1834. In 1831 and 1832 multiple versions of the sovereign had been issued with tweaked designs. However, from 1833 onwards, only 1 version was produced.
