1894 Gold Sovereigns
Occasionally we get a batch of coins all the same date, usually in exceptionally good condition. We have a number of 1894-M sovereigns in stock. M stands for Melbourne mint. As major bullion dealers, we often handle large quantities of gold sovereigns, and occasionally we come across small batches all the same date and mintmark. In a parcel of sovereigns we imported recently, there were over 30 pieces of 1894-M, all distinctly better than typical condition.
Naturally we do also have other mintmarks in stock also.
Victoria Old Head
Sovereigns were issued for Queen Victoria in almost every year from 1838 to 1901. There were three main obverse (head) designs, and two reverse designs. The old head, also known as veiled or widow head, was produced from 1893 to 1901 inclusive.
Melbourne Mint Batch
All these 1894 sovereigns we currently have are the same mintmark "M", which shows that they were minted at the Melbourne mint in Australia. Apart from the mintmark, which is quite difficult to see at first, there is no difference between these coins and other British sovereigns minted in London, Perth, or Sydney. One of our photographs shows where to find the mintmark, which gets easier to see once you get used to looking for them, and you know where to look!

Designs & Description
All Victoria Old Head sovereigns from 1893 to 1901 share the same obverse (head) design. The reverse is the familiar St. George & Dragon design originally engraved by Benedetto Pistrucci about 1817.
Grading - Condition
The 1894 M batch of coins have probably never been in circulation, but are quite heavily bagmarked, i.e. they have a number of scratches, scuffs and knocks which has almost certainly been caused by them being manhandled inside their mint bags in bank vaults during more than a century of their existence. Although in a strict sense of the word they are uncirculated, we prefer to call them almost uncirculated because of the heavy bagmarking.
