A new, second, portrait was introduced for decimalisation in 1971. On some of the coins, this appeared as early as 1968, but as no sovereigns were issued between 1969 and 1973 inclusive, the first date of sovereign to bear the new portrait was 1974.

Sovereigns are not always struck in every year, and second portrait sovereigns were issued in only seven years between 1974 and 1982.
