1871 Gold Sovereign Victoria Young Head Shield
This year was the first year in which the Sydney Mint struck 'British' sovereigns, to the same design as sovereigns circulating in Britain. Melbourne started striking its own sovereigns for the following year. However, the Australian branch mints (Sydney and Melbourne) struck the old shield reverse design, in addition to the St George reverse design, until 1887, apparently because the shield design was more popular in India and the East, were the dragon was considered to be a lucky creature. Australian shield sovereigns carry an 'S' or 'M' mintmark below the wreath on the reverse, in place of the die number usually found on London Mint shield reverse sovereigns.
